The Percussion section of the Ben Davis Band provides a diverse array of performance opportunities for students to enjoy. From Marching and Concert bands, to Jazz Band and Percussion Ensemble, each student will be exposed to a diverse world of music as it relates to percussion. Each student shall be prepared for the various musical situations they will encounter. The following guidelines have been established to ensure each student is prepared.

Each student will bring with them to each rehearsal a 3-ring binder (in which they will keep their music, notes, and percussion handouts), and a pencil.

Each student will own his/her own set of the following percussion equipment: ♦ 2 pair marimba mallets -OR- 2 pair vibraphone mallets (2 identical pairs, medium hard hardness, yarn mallets on long birch shafts, or 2 identical pairs, medium hardness, cord mallets on rattan shafts)

  • 1 pair general purpose concert snare drum sticks

  • 1 stick/mallet bag

  • 1 pair medium hardness timpani mallets

Activities in which percussionists can participate include:

Marching Band

Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Symphony

Jazz and Swing Bands

Percussion Ensemble

Competitive Winter Percussion

ISSMA Solo and Ensemble Contest

Indiana ALL-State Band, Orchestra, Jazz Band, & Percussion Ensemble

Each percussionist is required to perform in at least one small percussion ensemble or solo at ISSMA District (and possibly State) contest. Percussionists are also strongly encouraged to perform in church, other local musical groups and take private lessons in percussion.

Rehearsals for the Marching Percussion Section will begin in the spring and continue through the end of the school year. These rehearsals are required for percussionists in marching band. See the band calendar at the back of this handbook for more information. Any student having a conflict with a performance or rehearsal should speak to their director as soon as possible BEFORE the event.

WHAT EXPENSES WILL PERCUSSIONISTS HAVE FOR THE YEAR?

Each percussionist will have the same costs as seen on page 26-27 for Marching Band members, including the $120 instrument rental, as well as the cost of percussion equipment (see list above).

Percussionists not in Marching Band will be expected to pay the $40 per semester instrument rental fee as well as the cost for percussion equipment (see list above).

WINTER PERCUSSION

The Ben Davis Winter Percussion Ensemble provides students with a unique opportunity to learn, refine and perform a show completely based on percussion. The division Ben Davis enters in, the membership fee, and the rehearsal schedule are all unique to the show chosen on a specific year. Information will be available during late fall or early winter. This activity is open to any student in percussion. For more information contact Gary Rudolph.

ATTENTION!!!

Members of the Winter Guard and Winter Percussion will have additional Winter Guard and Winter Percussion fees to cover costs for uniforms, gloves, shoes, flags, props, etc. This fee is in addition to marching fees and fair share and must be paid by the end of January 2021

There are also additional travel fees for Winter Guard and Winter Percussion that will be announced at a later date when these fees are calculated.

Winter Guard and Winter Percussion seek sponsorships and do fundraisers to help defray some of the costs of these programs. You will be advised of fundraising opportunities for these winter activities as they become available.

ALL PREVIOUS FEES MUST BE PAID IN FULL BEFORE YOU WILL BE ALLOWED TO BE PART OF WINTER GUARD OR WINTER PERCUSSION!!
